The 106th edition of the Bordeaux Cup concluded this weekend, once again marking the history of this legendary tournament. The Bordeaux Club hosted high-level players who provided a memorable show, honoring the unique sport of real tennis. Here is a summary of the highlights of this tournament, which captivated enthusiasts and attracted new fans.
Highlights of the Tournament
The first day was full of emotions and remarkable performances. Among the highlights, note the excellent performance of Arnaud Tribaudeau, who brilliantly defeated Alex Boy 6/2 6/0, proving that his recent progress is promising. Jean-Baptiste Rossi, for his part, gave the number 1 seed, Bertie Vallat, a run for his money in an incredibly intense match, losing 6/4 6/5.
Youth was also in the spotlight with 13-year-old Max Warner, who showed great promise despite his elimination in the quarterfinals by Bertie Vallat. Max demonstrated a strong mental fortitude and great resilience, promising a bright future.
And what can be said about Bertie Vallat, only 18 years old and already with a 10 handicap... With a game of rare elegance, he reached the final (almost) without a hitch.
The Singles Final: An Epic Duel
The match of the tournament was undoubtedly the singles final. Bertie, with his youthful exuberance, faced Nicolas Victoir, nicknamed the albatross for his majestic reach and airy lightness.
The beginning of the match was one-sided, with Bertie largely dominating. Like Baudelaire's albatross, which becomes clumsy and awkward once grounded, Nicolas struggled to find his rhythm in the face of Bertie's repeated attacks. However, as the exchanges continued, Nicolas regained his composure, spreading his wings and reclaiming the upper hand with strategic intelligence and renewed aggressiveness.
At one point, we almost believed in a fifth set when Nicolas was leading 5/4 in the fourth set. But Bertie, with an authoritative 'dedans,' brought Nicolas back to earth, sealing his victory 6/5. At only 18 years old, the future looks golden for this young prodigy.
The Winners of the Doubles and the Consolation Draw
The doubles final was equally spectacular, with Nicolas Victoir and Charles Blanchot triumphing over Nicholas and Max Warner (6/5 6/3). Their coordination and team spirit were exemplary throughout the match.
In the consolation final, Charles Blanchot once again shone by defeating Nicholas Warner 7/5, demonstrating that at 55 years old, it is still possible to improve and put on a great show.
Gratitude to our sponsors and continuing the celebration of our juniors
