Chinon

Introduction

Le jeu de paume de Chinon: a living heritage to be preserved and a new short paume club in France.

Le jeu de paume de Chinon: a living heritage to be preserved and a new short paume club in France. The town of Chinon, located in Indre et Loire on the banks of the Vienne river, is famous for its fortress, its wine, Joan of Arc and Rabelais. Less well known is the fact that, like many French towns, it was home to as many as 5 jeu de paume during the Renaissance. Only one remains standing today. Located at 10, rue du jeu de paume, in the heart of the historic town center, it was threatened with destruction several times, serving in turn as a riding arena for cavalry troops at the end of the 18th century, a garage for horse-drawn carriages, a stable and, until a few years ago, a poultry warehouse. Now in a very poor state of repair, it nevertheless retains its walls and magnificent herringbone roof frame, which date back to the building's construction in the last quarter of the 16th century.

It is therefore one of the last remaining 16th century paume games, with all the heritage and cultural interest that this represents. For the Comité français de courte paume (CFCP), saving this witness to the history of our national sport is of paramount importance. Thanks to the support of our project by Chinon town hall the building was listed as a historic monument on December 29, 2015 (Arrêté cad. 295).
CFCP's project is to raise the funds needed to restore the hall so that courte paume can once again be played there, in keeping with both the building's history and modern sporting practice. The hall sits on a 630 m2 plot of land where, according to a project by heritage architect Carsten Hanssen in cooperation with CFCP, the various outbuildings required for the running of a jeu de paume club will be built: changing rooms, club house, master pealmaker's workshop and a garden.
The project is supported by the Fondation du Patrimoine, which has launched a tax-deductible subscription.
This subscription is dedicated to the first phase, which involves restoring the original volume and light, while getting rid of parasitic constructions in preparation for the intervention of INRAP archaeologists in September 2021.
The second, more costly phase will involve the complete restoration of the hall, and will be the subject of a second Fondation du Patrimoine subscription.
Surplus donations from the first phase will be automatically redirected to the second.
